*SCIENCE TEST TUESDAY!*

Science Vocabulary for Chapter 6

mineral – an object that is solid, formed in nature, and has never been alive

rock – an object that is solid, formed in nature, and is made of one or more minerals

igneous rock – rock that was once melted, then cooled and hardened; can be formed from a volcano

sedimentary rock – rock that forms from material that has settled into layers that have been squeezed together over time

metamorphic rock – rock that has been changed by temperature and pressure; usually formed within Earth’s crust

fossil – a trace or the remains of a living thing that died a long time ago

Science Test Review for Chapter 6

1.     Review all vocabulary words and meanings!

2.     Review and understand the rock cycle and how it works.

3.     Three ways to identify minerals are:

a.     hardness – how hard is this mineral when you scratch it or look at it on the Mohs Scale (remember: talc is the softest mineral and diamond is the hardest)?

b.     color – what does it look like on the outside?

c.      streak – when you scrape this mineral against a white tile, what color is the stripe of powder left on the tile?

4.      What are the different kinds of fossils?

a.     imprint – a footprint or track

b.     cast – the shape of an organism (not the actual organism, just a shape made when minerals settle into a mold)

c.      mold – similar to an imprint (you can use a mold to make a cast of an organism; this would be like filling up a tray for ice cubes with water – the tray is the mold and the ice cube is the cast)

d.     amber – hardened tree sap that can trap or “freeze” an organism

5.      If a scientist finds a fossil of a fish in the desert, what can the scientist tell about that area?

a.     The scientist can tell that the area used to be covered in water.

6.     Why are most fossils found in sedimentary rock? Why are most fossils found of animals, not of plants?

a.     Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock because igneous and metamorphic rock are both made from too much heat and pressure and would destroy an animal or plant. Sedimentary rock is made up of layers of dirt, rock, and the remains of organisms that were once alive, so most fossils are found there.

b.     Most fossils found are animals because the hard parts of animals, like their teeth and bones, will not break down easily. Plants and flowers are very soft and can be easily destroyed by wind, water, heat, or pressure.
